Gant – new brand at EscapeShoes

Gant – how it all started

Gant started with Berl Gantmacher, a Jew immigrant born in Ukraine. He came to the United States of America when he was 17 years old and, just like so many other immigrants back then, he gave an American fling to his name, changing it to Bernard Gantmacher. In this country he studied pharmacy at night and worked on a clothing factory by day. And that was where he met Rebecca rose, with whom he came to marry after coming back from the First World War.

It was on the post-war period that Gantmacher decided to apply the experience and knowledge he got by working on the factory to fund the Par-Ex Company Shirt, along with this friend Morris Shapiro, in Brooklyn, New York. The company had so much success selling their shirts to other brands that they moved to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1927. It was there that his children, Marty and Elliot were born, and grew up swiping the floors of the factory and learning how to make collars.

When World War II erupted, they both went on to fight, but when they came back they had an idea in mind to invest and renew the family business. That was when Marty went to study business administration and Elliot took to marketing. They both convinced their father to make custom shirts and that was when Gant inc. was created, in 1949.

Inspired by the rising of new styles, music and arts, they created new patterns, colours and rose the bar of shirt making. They even contributed to the careful, typical and not too formal Ivy League look. Since then, the diamond logo with the G on the inside has become a symbol of quality and excellency.

Up until 1971, Gant only made shirts and they excelled on what they did, but the Gant brothers thought it was time to make way on other clothing items.

It was then that, among other things, Gant shoes saw the light of day. For women, Gant has the “Linda” line. These sneakers have a sportier look, as you can see on the first three pictures. They are all made of extreme quality materials, like suede or leather and they have Eva foam soles for a bigger comfort while running and walking. And the colour pallete is fitting to the season, going from dark blue to beige, with other available options.

The last pair of sneakers are the brown Gant madison sneakers, even though they look sporty, they have a beautiful mix of different materials like wool felt and suede, and the tongue is made of soft synthetic fur.
