Do you know its origins?
In the fashion world, there are rarely any new objects as never seen before. The typical thing is to find reinvented pieces, improved shoes and re-thought designs. Without a doubt, all of these precious and original, but seem familiar to us. Well, with clogs is the same thing. How? You didn’t know? Then, keep reading and learn the history of the shoes that are a trend this season.
From accessory to work in the field to a fashion accessory for your best outfits, clogs have had a long life and are part of the culture of countries like Sweden, Spain, Portugal or Holland. The original models, made of alder, beech or walnut, were carved into a sturdy and very resistant piece. The traditional Portuguese clogs had a wooden sole and the rest was made of leather and it was fixed to the wood with studs or other finishes. They were used, and there are still people who use them, in wet areas and for chores that required going through wet or muddy terrains. Their structure, that, in some models, reminds us of a boat, and the small wooden heels made them perfect for the toughest chores. The foot was protected by a thick canvas sneaker or a wool piece that was rolled around and foot and tied.
These work shoes, which continue to be part of traditional regional outfits in these countries, could be decorated, either with several carved drawings over the wood or with other types of wooden incrustations in different colours, or well painted.
It was to be expected that they’d suffer a lot of changes throughout their life. With smoother lines and more delicate finishes, the clog that we now know is open on the heel, more similar to the Portuguese model, and can be currently found made of materials like plastic or cork. In fact, it continues to be used as work shoes by many companies and it’s common to see it as part of the hospital’s staff uniform, made completely of rubber. However, have you ever imagined that this rudimentary shoe would transform into a fashion accessory, reinvented by big brands?
The wooden soles became an icon for the Hippy movement in the 1970s, and after many decades in the shadow, they’ve returned stronger than ever since a few years ago and they’re gaining fame and, at the same time, height. We love the high heeled clogs! They’ve become an indispensable piece in any wardrobe and can be found with so many designs full of creativity and style, like the ones from the Portuguese brand, Xuz, which are handmade with alder wood and by combining high quality materials and gorgeous details, like feathers, studs or fringes.
We could say it louder, but not any clearer… You need a pair of clogs, now! And at EscapeShoes, you’ll be able to find gorgeous and original models, low and high. They’re waiting for you!
